SIU Carbondale graduates in business, education, and accounting cross the stage in a milestone moment celebrating perseverance, progress, and student achievement.

Grayslake, IL – May 17, 2025 – Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) proudly celebrated the academic achievements of its graduating students in a heartfelt commencement ceremony held Saturday at the University Center of Lake County. The event brought together graduates, faculty, family members, and community leaders to recognize the hard work and perseverance of SIUC students who completed their degrees through the University Center’s flexible and career-focused programs.
For many, this milestone represents not only personal growth, but also the power of accessible higher education in Lake County. Through the University Center of Lake County, SIUC offers regionally accredited degree programs that provide students—especially working adults and non-traditional learners—the opportunity to pursue higher education and advance their careers without leaving the area.
“This partnership has empowered so many of our students to earn their degrees while juggling full-time jobs, families, and other responsibilities,” said Dr. Myra Gaytan-Morales, Executive Director of the University Center. “It is a privilege to make students dreams into a reality, and together we continue to find ways to eliminate barriers to higher education through scholarships and networking opportunities. It is with great honor to host SIUC’s commencement ceremony and celebrate the success stories emerging right here in our community.”
Among the graduating class were students from a diverse range of programs offered by SIU Carbondale at the University Center, including Accounting, Business Administration, Elementary Education, and Special Education. These programs are designed with flexibility in mind—many offered in hybrid or weekend formats—to support working adults and non-traditional students in completing their degrees close to home.
Southern Illinois University Carbondale is one of 13 esteemed academic partners of the University Center of Lake County. Together, they offer over 100+ bachelor completion, graduate degree and certificate programs across disciplines such as education, healthcare, business, and engineering.
As tassels turned and caps flew, the ceremony served as a reminder that with determination, support, and the right opportunities—success is within reach, right here in Lake County.
