Grayslake, IL – July 10, 2025 – The University Center of Lake County (UCenter), a leader in undergraduate and graduate degree completion programs, is proud to announce the successful completion of a four-week Mini-Medical School hosted in partnership with Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFU) and UCenter’s FSCS El Centro. The program welcomed 31 middle school students from Diamond Lake School District 76 to its campus for a hands-on introduction to careers in the medical field.
The Mini-Medical School, led by RFU’s Chicago Medical School and the CPASS Foundation, gave 6th to 8th grade students a chance to learn about six key parts of the human body and healthcare. They studied the brain, heart, digestion, immune system, lungs, and muscles and bones. Through lessons, demonstrations, and hands-on activities, students gained a firsthand understanding of careers in medicine and connections to mental health, wellness, nutrition and first aid.
The program began with a formal White Coat Ceremony hosted at UCenter, where students took an oath to commit to their learning journey. The ceremony was attended by proud family members and representatives from UCenter, FSCS, and RFU. Each student was presented with a white coat to mark the beginning of their medical exploration.
A special part of the Mini-Medical School was the Hero/Parent Academy, which gave parents the opportunity to take part in the program by joining workshops on wellness, college planning, mental health, nutrition, and first aid. This helped families learn together and support each other at home.
“Our mission is enriching the lives of students within a vibrant community,” said Dr. Mytzy Rodriguez-Kufner, FSCS Program Director. “This collaboration not only exposed students to the medical field but also empowered families with resources to support long-term academic and personal growth within their communities and beyond.”
The program concluded with a graduation ceremony at RFU’s Rhoades Auditorium, followed by a campus tour and hands-on experience in the simulation lab. Students demonstrated their skills and shared insights from the experience.
