Grayslake- The University Center of Lake County is proud to celebrate alumna Dr. Citlali Flores, whose educational journey is a powerful example of perseverance, purpose, and the impact of accessible higher education.

Citlali recently earned her Doctor of Education in Superintendency and Educational System Administration from National Louis University, marking an incredible milestone in her career as an educational leader. Her achievement reflects years of dedication to learning, leadership, and service to students, families, and school communities.

Before earning her doctorate, Citlali completed her bachelor’s with Illinois State University and a master’s degree through Northeastern Illinois University with the support of the University Center. Being able to continue her education close to home played an important role in her journey. As a new mother, Citlali shared that she wanted to keep pursuing her goals, but needed options that allowed her to stay near her family and support system.

For many students, that balance can feel overwhelming. Citlali’s story shows how local access to higher education can open doors for people who are working, raising families, and building their futures all at the same time.

Far in Her Career

Today, Citlali serves as an Assistant Principal and brings more than 10 years of experience in education. Her work focuses on student services, school climate, social-emotional learning, restorative practices, behavior intervention systems, and family engagement. Throughout her career, she has also served as a Dean of Students, Bilingual Teacher, and Spanish Translator within special education services.

These experiences have shaped the way she leads. Citlali understands student support from many different perspectives, and she is passionate about creating school environments where students feel seen, supported, and empowered to succeed.

As a bilingual educator, Citlali works closely with teachers, families, and community partners to strengthen school culture and support student well-being. Her leadership is grounded in strong relationships, equity, data-informed decision-making, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

When asked what advice she would give to students, Citlali offered a message that is both simple and meaningful:

"Ask questions, and do not be afraid of looking stupid. Asking questions is part of learning, growing, opening doors and finding the support needed to move forward. "

Citlali’s journey from bachelor’s degree to doctorate is a reminder that every student’s path looks different, and that success is often built one step, one question, and one opportunity at a time.

The University Center is honored to have been part of Dr. Citlali Flores’ educational journey and proud to celebrate the meaningful impact she continues to make in education and in her community.
