Master of Science in Data Science

The MDS takes a comprehensive approach, integrating analytics and machine learning with business. This innovative curriculum gives you technical prowess in statistics, analytical methods and programming tools, while powering up your vital business skills. The result: a comprehensive foundation of knowledge so you can harness the information that mystifies others, creating real business value in any professional setting.

Delivery Method

Students complete the coursework fully online through eight-week sessions. Students may apply to this program for the fall and spring terms.

Admission Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in any major.

  • Completion of a basic course in statistics (with a grade of "C" or better) and prior coursework in programming.

  • At least one year of professional experience (may be waived with program director' approval).

  • Official transcripts from all graduate and undergraduate institutions you have attended.

  • An application for admission to graduate study from Elmhurst College.

  • Three professional recommendations from individuals who can comment on your leadership qualities, communication skills, personal motivation and capacity to succeed in graduate study.

  • A statement of purpose (1,000 words) describing your personal and professional goals and how the completion of the graduate degree will enhance them.

  • A current resume documenting your work history.


Interested students are not required to submit graduate examination scores. An admission interview with the program director is required for all applicants.

Transfer Policy

Up to 2 graduate courses from an accredited college/university will be considered at the discretion of the program director.

Special Characteristics

  • This unique, part-time program is offered entirely online and students may complete the program in two years.

  • Students complete two project-based courses, providing an environment for integrating lessons learned from the program's multifaceted approach and for refining skills necessary to put the program's theoretical knowledge to work in realistic and changing circumstances.

  • Students have the option to focus their studies around professional and personal interests by taking two electives.

  • Elmhurst also offers a graduate certificate in data science. It consists of five existing courses from the master's in data science program, and is offered entirely online.
